Content marketing is one of the most popular marketing strategies that you can adopt and integrate into your business. It is a simple concept that does not require any tech skills to implement. Content marketing simply means using educational or informative content to attract leads and convert them into customers/sales.
Think of a café employee offering free cookies, detox weight-loss juice or some bite-sized dessert to customers, giving them a free taste of it. If the customer likes it, they end up purchasing the item.
There are five types of content – educational, motivational, informative, influential, and emotional – to consider including on your website or integrating into your business model to attract visitors.
But to implement this strategy effectively you really need to follow these five simple tips:
1. Subscribe to SEO tools
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tools help you analyze your own website as well as your competitors’. This information provides insights into which keywords are highly searched online, and what your competitors’ websites commonly use to attract customers.
These insights will drive marketing strategies which, if implemented correctly, will positively impact your business.
Popular SEO tools include Semrush, Spyful, Ahrefs, Moz, and more.
However, we know that these tools are not cheap. Depending on where you’re from, they could cost between $99 and $229 per month for their monthly plans. Unless you are a digital marketing agency, this is simply not worth it.
There is a free version: Google’s keyword tool planner. It is good enough for starters but if you want a more comprehensive analysis then the above-mentioned SEO Tools are definitely a worthwhile investment.

2. Install an analytics tool on your website
In a similar way to SEO tools, analytics tools are essential for providing insights into your customers’ behavior. Through the data you generate from analytics tools, you obtain information on your website visitors’ demographic as well as their behavioral and psychographic data. In lay terms: where your customers are, at what time, whether they are male or female, their age group, interests, and what type of information they usually search for.
One of the best and most effective analytical tools is Google Analytics – and it’s FREE!
If you want to find alternative analytics tools, type the phrase ‘Google Analytics alternative’ in Google search.
By understanding your visitors’ behaviour, you will know what content to create. Although this is not a definitive solution, it is one of the strategies you can apply if you are on a budget. But if budget is not an issue, you can always subscribe to a software called BuzzSumo, which allows you to search for popular content or hot topics to discuss.
3. Identify the SUBJECT and KEYWORDS, and START WRITING
If you are on a budget, this is the next thing you should be doing: identifying the subject, sourcing the keywords from Google keywords planner, and writing your article offering your opinion on it.
When you write the article, decide whether or not it is informative, educational, influential, motivational or emotional, and identify your target audience. Then write it as if you’re talking to that particular target audience.
Of course, you can also outsource this task to a writer, but the difficult part is finding the right writer: someone who knows your subject and industry and is capable of putting it all together.
